St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity Sister Nancy Grassia
St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity Sister Nancy Grassia, the former Sister Josette, died Oct. 14 at Mt. St. Mary Hospital, Lewiston, N.Y. She was 79.
A funeral Mass for Sister Nancy, who served as administrator of Perth Amboy Catholic School, Perth Amboy, from 1987 to 1990, and pastoral assistant as St. James Parish, Woodbridge, from 1992 to 1995, was celebrated Oct. 17 at the order’s chapel in Stella Niagara, N.Y. Interment was at Stella Niagara Cemetery.
A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Sister Nancy was the daughter of the late Joseph Grassia and the late Nunzia (Nancy) Latona Grassia.
She entered Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity Sept. 5, 1954; professed vows July 2, 1957, and perpetual vows August 18, 1960, all at Stella Niagara.
Sister Nancy was a graduate of Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart; Rosary Hill (Daemen) College, Amherst, N.Y.; and Niagara University, N.Y., where she earned a Master of Science degree in education.
During her service in education for the Diocese of Buffalo, she served as a teacher and principal, and also served the retired and infirm at Stella Niagara Health Center.
She also served as an administrator and a teacher in the dioceses of Columbus, Ohio;
Trenton, and Paterson, and the Archdiocese of Newark.
She is survived by her sisters, Charlotte Edlefsen of Buffalo and Josephine Stamotokis of California; and a brother, John (Suzzanne) Grassia of Florida.
