After a long illness, Religious Teachers Filippini Sister Rose Schimizzi, 92, died peacefully on the feast of St. Joseph, March 19, at St. Joseph Hall, Villa Walsh, Morristown.
A funeral Mass was celebrated March 23 at the Saint Lucy Chapel at Villa Walsh. Interment was at Ave Maria Cemetery.
Predominantly a middle school teacher, Sister Rose taught at Holy Rosary, Jersey City; Our Lady of Pompei, Baltimore; St. Mary of Mount Virgin, New Brunswick; St. Joseph, Hammonton; Holy Redeemer, Cleveland; Purification, Ellwood City, Pa.; St. Anthony, Akron, Ohio; St. Anthony, Bristol, Conn.; Holy Trinity, Long Branch; Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Orange.
Sister Rose served as the principal at Queen of Peace Maywood; Most Holy Rosary, Perth Amboy; St. Ann, Hoboken; Our Lady of Libera, West New York; St. Cecilia, Iselin; and St. Lucy Filippini Academy, Newark.
Sister Rose also had the role of superior at St. Mary of Mount Virgin, New Brunswick; Our Lady Queen of Peace, Maywood; Most Holy Rosary, Perth Amboy; and St. Cecilia, Iselin.
Sister Rose was born and raised in Watkins Glen, N.Y. She entered the Religious Teachers Filippini in 1940, and received her habit in 1941, and made her religious profession in 1944.
Sister Rose earned at a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education at St. John’s University Cleveland; and master’s degree at Seton Hall University, South Orange.
She also served as librarian at Our Lady of Mount Virgin, New Brunswick.
Sister Rose retired at Villa Walsh in 2007 and became a resident at St. Joseph Hall Infirmary in 2011.
Sister Rose is the daughter of the late Francis Schimizzi and Frances Calabria, and sister of brothers Dominic Schimizzi of Watkins Glen, and Pallottine Father Pasquale Schimizzi; and sisters Pauline Henderson, Elizabeth Sabatini and Josephine Schimizzi of Watkins Glen; and Religious Teachers Filippini Sister Mary Schimizzi.
She is survived by her beloved sister, Religious Teachers Filippini Sister Catherine Schimizzi, of Villa Walsh, and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Arrangements were handled by the Doyle Funeral Home, Morristown.
