Mercy Sister Mary Madonna Vona, 93, aunt of Father David B. Kosmoski, pastor, St. Andrew Parish, Avenel, died peacefully Feb. 21 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung.
Sister Mary Madonna earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education at Georgian Court University, Lakewood.
Her teaching assignments included St. Nicholas School, Atlantic City; St. John the Evangelist School, Lambertville; St. Joseph School, North Plainfield, and Perth Amboy Catholic School System. She felt that during her 50 years of teaching in elementary school, she was able to influence the younger children in their love for God. It was something that she treasured.
In 1991, she moved from education to offer her services at St. Mary Parish, Perth Amboy. Later, moving to Gabriel Hall at Mount Saint Mary, she found time to do watercolor, a pastime she enjoyed immensely.
When the time came for her to move to McAuley Hall she commented, “It’s a joy to be a Sister of Mercy and I am grateful to have found peace in giving myself entirely to God.”
In addition to Father Kosmoski, she is survived by her brothers, Father Michael Vona and John Vona of New Jersey; Joseph Vona of Florida; a sister Frances Kosmoski of New Jersey, and many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews and Sisters of Mercy in the Mid-Atlantic Community.
A funeral Mass was concelebrated by Father Kosmoski and Father Vona at McAuley Hall Health Care Center Feb. 25.
Burial was at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.
Memorial donations may be made to Sisters of Mercy, Mid-Atlantic Community, 1645 Highway 22, Watchung, NJ 07069.
