Mercy Sister Annette Duignan, 78, who served both the Diocese of Metuchen and the Diocese of Trenton in numerous capacities, died peacefully Feb. 3 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung.
Sister Annette was born in Trenton, where she attended St. Mary Grammar School and Cathedral High School. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1953 and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education at Georgian Court College, Lakewood.
Sister Annette professed her vows at the Mount St. Mary Motherhouse, Watchung, Aug. 17, 1959.
Her assignments were in the parish communities and schools of St. Joseph, Keyport; St. Catherine, East Keansburg; St. Mathias, Somerset; St. Francis, Metuchen; and Sacred Heart, South Plainfield, where she also served as principal for six years.
At the end of her teaching years, she served as the librarian at St. Frances Cabrini School, Piscataway, for several years.
When she was officially retired, Sister Annette actively ministered in St. James Parish, Woodbridge, where she assisted in the after-school program and served in the food bank.
Sister Annette had a great love for the children she taught as well as a concern for their families and was known to have a kind heart and a listening ear for those in need.
She is survived by her dearly loved sisters, Geraldine Wisniewski of Trenton, and Mary Yenny of Florida; many loving and caring nieces and nephews; and the Sisters of Mercy in the Mid-Atlantic Community.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at McAuley Hall Health Care Center Feb. 8. Burial was at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.
